Ancillary Task Clearing Up of What you can use etc..

In response to Alice's question about using this brilliant image for her digipak:

I phoned OCR and they referred to the bit in the spec that says:

  1. "All material for all tasks to be produced by the candidates with the exception of acknowledged non- original sound or image material used in a limited way in video/radio work."

So that's a no to anything like the image above.

To be clear, YOU HAVE TO PRODUCE EVERYTHING YOURSELVES.

So if you want to use an image like the one above, you have to draw it yourselves.

Am thinking the easy way round this is just to use a still image from one of your location shoots…

Here's Megan's digipak (top) and magazine advert:

We Were Both Right...

Hmm, it seems that OCR do actually apply a small Raw to UMS conversion - but not consistently the same amount to every grade - I'll show you all on Friday, but here's Alice's data:

So as you can see, her Raw mark (what she got out of 50 for each exam essay) was 94/100 - just like it says on her script in Fronter.

However, the UMS grade (the result that YOU all see on your results statement on results days) is 99/100.

There has clearly been a conversion - in Alice's case, it equates to 5 marks!  Brilliant!  But when looking at everyone else's raw marks to UMS, it appears that the lower down the scale you go, the smaller the conversion - so someone getting, say, 50 raw marks - the UMS conversion is only a paltry 1 or 2 marks.

I've no idea why.

I may speak to Mr V tomorrow as I seem to remember some kind of curved graph from the dark days of GCSE maths that may explain this conversion thing.

Essay Question

Using ONLY your AS coursework, answer this question:

1 (b) 1b Analyse one of your coursework productions (your AS vid) in relation to the concept of narrative. (25 marks)

Once you've had a little thinking time, perhaps 5 or 10 mins planning a few things, spend only 30mins on the actual writing of this response - it's important that you start as you mean to go on and time/limit yourself half an hour only as this is obviously the amount of time you'll get in the exam for this 1(b) question.

MUST be handwritten and neat - don't make me have to try to read your writing

Think about including these things:

  • a detached analysis of your AS video
  • detailed reference to the video
  • using the concept from the question (narrative)
  • using two examples of theory

I want these handed in BY Thursday 21st November 3:20pm - to my office, any time.

Lessons this week:

Ms Scott will be having the entire afternoon of lessons on Wednesday so you have no lesson with me.

On Friday, Ms Scott isn't in so we thought it'd be a great opportunity for you all to schedule a complete morning of filming as a group - no one's at work, no one's got prior engagements etc

I'm telling you now so's you can organise extras, locations, storyboards ready for Friday.

The media room'll be open and free for you to use if you'd prefer to spend your time as a group editing - I'll be in there 1&2 as normal.

If you're NOT going to go filming, I'll see you at 9:05am.

If you ARE going filming, do let me know somehow (blog, email, face-to-face) before Friday morning, so's I can give you your attendance mark, otherwise you'll be marked absent.

RESEARCH TASK: Media Theory Presentations

Below are all your new Media Theorists.

Do some individual research on them.

Your task is to do a 5min presentation on your theorist.

There is almost TOO much stuff online about all of them - your first job will be to sift through it all and collate only the good bits into a form that suits you - ppt, prezi, vid etc - is entirely up to you.

YOU MUST NOT SIMPLY COPY ANYTHING THAT'S ALREADY OUT THERE.

You must also provide an A4 handout about your theorist that YOU'VE PUT TOGETHER.

Remember, images make things a LOT easier to remember..

Presentations will take place:
Wednesday 27th November 2013

Adobe Photoshop CS6

Photoshop has now been installed on:

Big Macs 6, 5, 4, 3

Little Macs 6, 5, 4

So we can all crack on and get our practice Digipak finished!

The rest of the macs are still due to be done - I think by Monday, we'll have it on all of them.

Do a YouTube search for tutorials on it, to teach yourself - there are loads!  And when you find a good one, get it on your blog, or send me the link.

Marking Criteria for G324

Hard copy will be provided for you in Wednesday's lesson - we DO have a lesson as I've been given Ms Scott's 5&6 lesson (she's getting ready for her speech at the Prospective Post 16 Parents evening), so I'll see you then!

This Week's Task:

Click here for the latest from Pete's blog

I want you all to have a go at the task:  "Make your own album cover"

Follow the 5 steps on Pete's blog and then get your final version uploaded onto your blog along with proof of all your steps.

Photoshop is available on all pcs in the ICT rooms - have asked Ed to install it on all of the Macs ready for the real thing.  However, there are plenty of free CD creators online - use your initiative and go find one...

I want this finished and uploaded onto your blog for Friday's lesson so we can look/share them IN THE LESSON.

Here's my first attempt (couldn't figure out how to make it a square - hopefully one of you will be able to show me on Friday):

Group Vlogs from yesterday

Labelling your blog

I know it feels very early to be saying this, but I want you to start thinking/producing labels for your blog posts now.

This way, it's a lot easier for me to see the 'holes' in your blog that may need filling as we're going along, rather than a big mad rush some time in Feb and us missing something.

Megan's labels by the end of her blog to give you an idea (but obviously yours don't have to be identical to these):

Storyboarding

This was Megan Southern's post from 1st October last year:

It's interesting in that she's outlined just how important storyboarding is before any filming takes place.. and I also think some of your made the same mistake as she did in for your AS, you just went out one day and filmed - in fact some of you actually have that as your plan A!

Not good.

Here's what they ended up with before they shot a single frame:

So with this in mind, you can see why I get so angsty when I give you the group time in class but some of you just waste it by having a chat or blogging.

Consequently, you now have a group Storyboard deadline, by which time, you'll present your storyboards to the class and I'll film it for your blogs.

Friday 25th October - day we break up for half term.

Video of the Week...

This one is an A2 student's from Wyke Sixth Form from last year:

If you watch it on YouTube and read the comments, he says he shot the whole thing on an SLR camera using a high shutter speed - so the frames stayed clear and crisp when slowed right down.

Love the use of the fish-eye lens too.

Oh, and he also advised "Start early and plan. Be prepared to re-shoot and re-edit."

Equipment Log

Please see the updated equipment chart below - what no. charger do you all have?  Whoever has it from each group, please comment and let me know before next lesson.

Also, Sophie/Seher, Khadeja, Eleanor and Sara - please tell me what to fill in your blanks (leave me a comment) - between the five of you, I've lost track of your stuff and before we go any further, we must complete this audit!!

Two Tasks This Week...

This week's tasks are twofold:

Blog task no 1)

Design a Mood Board using words and images of your song's vid (that your group will be constructing - NOT a mood board for the original vid of the song).

Use either ppt, prezi, scribd, whatever!  You could even MAKE a collage on a big piece of paper - I don't care - if you do this though, obviously, I want a pic or vid of this on your blog...

Include:

• Photographs: PRIMARY and SECONDARY images of locations
• Costume, Fashion, Props, Instruments
• Themes
• Symbols and connotations
• Inspiration from other music videos
Use KEY WORDS in your comments: mise-en-scene, atmosphere, settings of music videos, links between visuals and lyrics, representation, genre, audience etc...
FOR EXAMPLE

These images convey a gloomy, melancholy feel representing the feelings of confusion and feeling lost, music artists such as Coldplay tend to use mysterious backgrounds for the music videos and CD covers for songs such as Violet Hill where scenes of a violet grey sky are used throughout linking to the lyrics.
The graveyard represents death but could also symbolise emotions…

Here's Megan's Mood Board from last year, in the form of a prezi, to give you some ideas:

And blog task no 2)

In order to make a music video of a song that's not yours, you must 'ask the artist's permission'.  The exam board doesn't expect a reply, but you have to prove that you asked.  You don't need to do one each - one per group, and then shared, will be fine.

So:

  1. Write your email
  2. Print screen and get it on your blog
  3. Comment on why you've sent the email

It could go like this:
  • Dear -
  • Our names are -
  • We are studying - (explain the course)
  • Explain what this project involves -
  • Request to use their song -
  • Tell them you have no intent to sell your video, once made
  • Assure them there won't be any copyright issues as it will solely be used for an educational purpose
  • Please contact if any concerns

Date of both tasks due on your blogs by, but you don't have to wait until, (Athena):  Fri 4th October

Sunday, 22 September 2013

For Friday's lesson - Fri 27th September

THIS WEEK’S TASK
ü  Archive your THREE potential songs for your music video “Idea 1…Idea 2…Idea 3” and upload the videos to your blogs
ü  Blog AT LEAST  3 reasons FOR and AGAINST making a video for each song. (Good points vs Bad points)
ü  THEN upload the LYRICS ONLY to your chosen song

B) Initial concept ideas for your video: locations / themes / shot types / ‘angle: feminism/political message’ / performance or concept video / lighting / links to lyrics etc…

Remember you need a combination of text, images, videos, links to other websites / Twitter etc. on your blog

WORD VERIFICATION!!

WILL YOU PLEASE ALL SET YOUR WORD VERIFICATIONS...

LIKE I ASKED YOU - A LOT OF TIMES!!!!

I can't post on the majority of your blogs - and I'm sick of writing a comment out, go to publish it and then it asks for verification.. sort it out!

Orange Is The New Black

The two articles I was on about on Friday...

Kevin Spacey: James MacTaggart Memorial Lecture

Just seen this advert...

On tv, there was a bit with shoes - not replicated in this ad off YTube.. dammit!  Anyway, one set of shoes stood still and didn't change, but the shoes standing next to them changed loads - brilliant!

Maybe some ideas for yours?

"Star" Research Project

Star Image: Artist Research Project

What makes a star a star?

The star, as well as the music video, is a media text: both can be ‘read’ and analysed.

“A star is an image constructed (as any other aspect of fiction is) from a range of materials – eg advertising and magazines, as well as films and music.” Richard Dyer

TOP TIP: start collecting theory on music videos and audience - you will need this for your A2 exam!

Your project is to research into how a star’s image changes over time.
§  Choose a ‘big’ name artist
§  Choose an artist from your chosen genre

STAR IMAGE RESEARCH PROJECT: How do record companies
      c        construct a star's image??

Upload all your research under a 'research and planning' label on your blog. Areas to cover are:

a)      Which star (from your genre) have you chosen to research? Mention time period and genre
b)      Debut single / album and image. Provide textual evidence of early star image (video / print / website). Who are their fan base? How do they appeal to their audience (fans)?
c)      How have they changed and why? How do they maintain / grow their fan base? Textual evidence of changing star image (include video).
d)      Any press coverage / media manipulation / product endorsement / controversy / appearances on talk shows etc.?
e)      Summarise the changing image of your star (refer to a range of changing characteristics)

           EXT: any intertextuality?
Robbie Williams’ Millennium à James Bond
           Madonna à Marilyn Monroe
           J-Lo /Geri Halliwell à Fashdance

Key Terminology to use in your Research Project
§  Record company
§  Product endorsement
§  Star image
§  Richard Dyer (theorists)
§  Audience appeal
§  Representation
§  Colour symbolism
§  Intertextuality
§  Media Manipulation
§  Generic conventions (eg female artists always…)

Deadline for the completion of this project on your blogs:

                                   Friday 27th September
